Vibrant Violet

I am loving all of the spring colors right now, but the catch is that the sun is setting much much later (8 pm). I normally plan my photoshoots 1-1.5 hours before the sunset. But because the sun is setting so late, we found open shade and met much earlier, so we would not disrupt Violets bedtime. Mommy was smart, and fed violet right before we took photos! That made her a happy girl!
WHEN TAKING PHOTOS: Plan your photo session, 1 -1.5 hours before the sun will set to get good outdoor lighting. Photograph under open shade. Watch carefully under trees that bright light is not peaking through leaves, leaving spots of light on your subjects faces. Technically, the light should be behind you or off to the left or right of your subject (photo above shows light coming from left of the subject), However sometimes you can get some very artistic images by allowing the sun to come directly into your lens creating what is called lens flare (check out the Chin Chin go away shoot).
WHEN BEING PHOTOGRAPHED: Make sure that everyone has had a good nap and has a full belly. Do not expect your children to be in photo taking moods, if you have sacrificed their nap in order to schedule a photo session. For Violets photos we met at 5:45 (a full 2 hr. and 15 min before sunset). If your child's happy time is morning time, you can do a morning session as well. Find where the sun enters your home and throw open the windows!

Simplicity

My good friend, Melissa, came over so I could schmoosh all over her new little girl, Avrey! Of course she wasn’t getting out of my home without me snapping some photos! At first Melissa refused to be in the photos, because like all of us new mommies, showers and hair washes are very few and far between. I begged her to trust me and here is what we got! I did walk away with a few great tips for all my readers!
#1 SIMPLICITY IS BEAUTIFUL! Don’t get me wrong, I love a well positioned hair bow...but some of the most captivating images emerge when you take all the “extra’s” away!
#2 BLANK WALLS WORK! Melissa is simply standing in front of one of the blank walls in my home. You can do the same in your home for a backdrop. Just have your subject stand 2-3 feet away from a blank wall, throw open lots of windows for light and go for it!

A friend of mine, Dacia Coffey(see her blog here), suggested that I use my blog to give my clients helpful tips on how to look good in photos & how to take great photos at home. I like the idea! So we will start with the Clay family!
I absolutely LOVE the bond that we captured between the family members during this photoshoot. There are so many things that the Clay family did RIGHT, but I will stick to just 2 really great things to remember!
TIP #1. Mommy Clay was so nervous that she would have a double chin in her photos. Let’s face it! No matter how skinny or plumb you are...this is a common fear! I am always told by clients to bring my “skinny lens”.
WHEN TAKING PHOTOS, stand ABOVE your subject, so you are photographing them at an angle. Everyone’s face looks better like this!
WHEN BEING PHOTOGRAPHED, reach out and kiss your babies! By reaching out, you are stretching out...ta-da! NO double chin.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, be happy with who you are! My job is to show the bond that you have with your family. Double chin or no double chin, you will love your photos MOST if you are spending more time laughing and having a good time with each other and less time trying to look like a model! Mommy Clay said to me after receiving her photos, “I actually just cried looking at these pictures. I am not sure how, but they are absolutely MY KIDS! You can just totally see their little personalities in all of them. I LOVE them!!! I didn't even mind the neck fat wrinkles because the "moments" were just so precious!”
TIP #2. Try not to consistently keep telling your kids to “SMILE” or “SAY CHEESE”. As you can see in the first image shown, sometimes our kids most natural moments are the most breathtaking!

Little Violet had an achy tummy at first, but after a warm soak in the tub, we got some precious smiles and she showed off her beautiful baby blue eyes!
